Abstract :A mili-joul class diode laser source with pulse width < 10 ns has been demonstrated. This laser source has a very smallfootprint of 4 cm x 5 cm and a very high electro optical conversion efficiency of ~25%. It is therefore very well suited forapplications in compact, light weight 3D flash lidar systems. A novel diode driver architecture was required to achievethese performances. The laser source operates between 800nm and 1000nm. At 1550 nm the pulse energies are lowerthan in the NIR but still much higher than for any other laser source of this size.
