ELBA is the new high power fiber laser specifically designed to address biomedical applications including ophthalmology, gene sequencing and high resolution microscopy.

The laser will be displayed for the first time at the LASER World of PHOTONICS trade fair in Munich, Germany from June 22-25, 2015.

Lasers have been valued for biological applications for a number of years, due to the specific interaction between the laser radiation and the targeted biological samples.  For example, laser light at 577 nm is favored for a number of ophthalmic applications as it closely matches the peak absorption of hemoglobin but is transmitted easily through other ocular media.  In addition, lasers have played an important role in dramatically increased the speed in which researchers can sequence genes.  Using laser sources to illuminate fluorescently tagged DNA and RNA samples, scientists are able to quickly and accurately map genetic sequences.

As these, and other, biological applications proliferate, there is an increasing need for highly reliable and stable laser sources that are as easy to operate as a light bulb.

The ELBA builds on Quantel’s proven fiber laser heritage (thousands of  units fielded) using telecom-grade components to deliver up to 3W of visible TEM00 output in a maintenance-free package specifically designed to be integrated into bioinstrumentation.  The exceptional beam quality (M2 < 1.1) enables efficient fiber delivery without the losses seen by other sources.  The system is CE and FDA certified for use in medical devices and includes redundant electronic shutter, monitoring photodiode, electronic emission and power level signals.

“Instrument manufacturers, whether in the bio space or not, are looking for state-of-the-art lasers that are as robust and reliable as the instruments they build.” said Alex Biasi, Product Line Manager for Fiber Lasers at Quantel.  “They often need different wavelengths to target specific applications and they want maintenance-free devices that are simple to integrate into their systems.”

“As you may know, Quantel has a division focused on the design and manufacture of ophthalmic instrumentation,” said David Pureur, General Manager of Fiber Lasers at Quantel.  “This gives our laser design team great insight into what is needed of the ideal laser source for many of these biomedical applications.  And our heritage of producing highly reliable, telecom-grade systems is a perfect fit for these applications.”
