CalPoly is a primarily undergraduate institution and one of the four finalists in the First Annual Bright Ideas Competition (BIC) held during the 2017 CLEO conference. This competition is hosted by Quantel Laser and The Optical Society Foundation (OSAF), the charitable division of the Optical Society (OSA).

Although CalPoly didn't win the BIC Award, Professor Doig and his undergraduate student, Daniel Stalter, presented such a compelling case for their research on solar vehicles that Quantel Laser had to find a way to help them out. Their older laser had failed months earlier which meant they could no longer use their wind-tunnel for key particle imaging velocimetry (PIV) experiments.

As part of their outreach program, the Quantel Team was able to present a fully refurbished Evergreen laser to Professor Doig and his students. Quantel customer service engineer, Jacob Lincoln, a CalPoly 2012 EE alum, was onsite to supervise the students’ installation of the Evergreen and train them in its operation.

Dr. Diane Wong gave a seminar on laser theory, applications and safety at a Quantel-hosted pizza party to celebrate the donation of the Evergreen Laser to CalPoly.  During this eat and greet, students engaged in lively discussions with the Quantel Laser representatives about their future careers in optics and engineering.
