Quantel Laser, a manufacturer of high-power, solid-state lasers, has opened a new service center in China at the offices of their long-time partner, Titan Electro-Optics (TEO; Beijing). The service center, inaugurated at a gala opening ceremony, will provide local service to all Quantel customers in China. Local service will also be available at the company’s offices in Shanghai and Shenzhen.

Quantel wins sizable preamplifier module order for CEA's Megajoule Laser

The French Atomic Energy Commission (CEA) has ordered preamplifier modules from Quantel (Les Ulis, France) to be shipped over a four-year period. Under terms of the multi-year contract, Quantel will manufacture and test the critical preamplifier modules used in the Laser Source Assembly. The Preamplifier Modules will increase the energy of the initial pulse from several billionths of a Joule to around 1 Joule. Further amplification takes place in the amplifier section and, after beam combination, the total energy delivered to the target is expected to be in excess of one million Joules.

LIDT wavelength-scaling rule of thumb shown to be inaccurate

Optical catalogs often specify the laser-damage threshold of an optic at only one or two wavelengths. This raises the question: What is the laser-induced damage threshold (LIDT) of that optic at other wavelengths? One rule of thumb that has been proposed is that the LIDT can be scaled by an inverse square-root relationship with wavelength: for example, a LIDT measured to be 10.0 J/cm2 at 1064 nm would scale to 7.07 J/cm2 at 532 nm.

Quantel Laser (Paris, France) has been awarded a $7-million, multi-year contract by a Tier 1 defense contractor to supply lasers to be built into a wing-mounted fighter aircraft pod, such as on the French Dassault Rafale fighter.
